Indian Classical Vocal Performance
APPRECIATE IT MORE ...
This is a presentation of Raag Bhairav. The presentation of a Raaga begins with Alaap. Alaap is sung on an "ah" vowel and establishes the "key signature" of the Raaga. Then, as shown in this clip, the bandish (main composition) is sung. This composition is usually about divinity, love, or the weather. Finally, the Raaga is elaborated through the singing of the Indian solfege (sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa) at incredibly fast speeds. Since it is a classical discipline, even at these incredibly fast speeds, the pitches must be perfect. All the patterns of solfege, nuances and various trills are improvised on the spot.

About
I have had the rare fortune of being educated in both worlds of classical music: East and West. My passion for and knowledge of both Indian classical music and Opera allows me to bring something new to the table in all my artistic endeavours. After 14 years of formal musical training, at the age of 22, I am more fervent than ever to push forward with my lifelong goal of popularizing Indian classical music/dance in the West, by means of traditional performance as well as clever and exuberant fusion.
Notable Teachers: Seth Riggs (Hollywood vocal coach to Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder etc.) Sudeshna Maulik (Prime disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pt. Chitresh Das, and Padmabhusan Kumudini Lakhia), Urmila Sharma (Kathak Kendra, disciple of Pt. Birju Maharaj), Usha Sharma (Disciple of Gopi Krishna), Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick & Priyanka Mallick Pandey (Darbhanga Gharana)

THE ADRENALINE FOREVER FROZEN IN TIME ...

The first Kathak performance of my life. Thank you to Guru Urmila Sharma at Allahabad Kathak Kendra for seeing a spark within me and granting me this opportunity! The pieces I performed in this show were learned within ten days. Some pieces I learned the morning of the performance!

Tying the ghungroo (ankle bells) ... There are 100 bells on each foot. Sometimes even 200!

The success of this vocal performance is all owed to the blessings of my Guru Ji, Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick.

Behind me is the very talented Chinmay Kulkarni, my tabla player. Together, we put this show together in three rehearsals!

Seen here posing with the Fairy Queen, I play a poised fairy with some fancy dance moves!

On stage in my first ever opera production!

Transforming into a fairy in the dressing room. Excited to get on stage and perform in G&S's Iolanthe!

During my first year as a music student at McGill, I joined the McGill Savoy Society's production of Iolanthe. It was my first production and I fell in love with the process, the lights and the STAGE! Being a naturally shy person, this show brought me out of my chrysalis.

I could not have asked for a more kind and supportive cast. Truly.

Two talented ladies doing my makeup at once. I could not look more comfortable, could I? ;)

Some stills from G&S's operetta, Iolanthe. I was part of the chorus of fairies.
